Too many young women I think are harder on themselves than circumstances warrant. They are too often selling themselves short. They too often take criticism personally instead of seriously. You should take criticism seriously because you might learn something, but you can’t let it crush you. You have to be resilient enough to keep moving forward, whatever the personal setbacks and even insults that come your way might be. That takes a sense of humor about yourself and others. Believe me, this is hard-won advice I’m putting forth. It’s not like you wake up and understand this. It’s a process.

When I was younger I was painfully shy and my family (aunts and uncle included, dad excluded) loved to tell me to talk more and then laugh or point it out when I was talking, or I’d tell them something and two days later everyone knew about it. It happened over and over during my teen years to a point I just stopped trying.

Fast forward 10 years later, my mother keeps asking me why I’m so talkative with other people but not with them. She wonders how I can be so ‘smily’ when I’m out there but closed off when I’m home. She keeps asking if I hate her (which I don’t, but I hate that she keeps asking). And she can’t understand why. I tell her no one ever listened to me and she just says it’s not true.

It’s tiring when I have to defend myself every week. It sucks that I feel more confident talking to strangers, students, friends than family. I still have to rehearse things in my head before talking to family members and it sucks that even today people don’t listen…

Telling a young girl she can’t wear what she wants because it’s not appropriate encourages the idea that men’s reactions should dictate society’s norms, and that all women are meta-Eves, tempting and ensnaring men with our sultry-eyed gaze. My parents’ culture is steeped in patriarchy, in the philosophy of the one-step machismo machine, where there is just one kind of man, and two kinds of women: the angel and the whore. These limited ideas of masculinity breed men who want ownership of women.

FAKE GEEK GUYS: A MESSAGE TO MEN ABOUT SEXUAL HARASSMENT

By Andy Khouri

“I think this woman is wrong about something on the Internet. Clearly my best course of action is to threaten her with rape.”

That’s crazy talk, right? So why does it happen all the time?

Honest question, dudes.

That women are harassed online is not news. That women in comics and the broader fandom cultures are harassed online is not news. That these women are routinely transmitted anonymous messages describing graphic sexual violence perpetrated upon them for transgressions as grave as not liking a thing… that is actually news to me, and it’s probably news to a lot of you guys reading this.

So what do we do about it?

This.

Not gonna lie; it’s been a really awful week in comics.

Hopefully something constructive, far-reaching and industry-changing comes out of this whole mess of sexism and misogyny, and dudes get called out on their bad behaviour & learn the #1 top level vital lesson, that rape threats are NEVER AN OPTION, GUYS!

Hopefully comic professionals finally understand that they cannot change the increasingly strong tread of women entering -and- staying in the field, in all and every aspects: writing, drawing, inking, editing, reporting, mentoring and in leadership roles. That all women in the comic industry have a say. All. Of. Them. That feminism doesn’t mean their POV becomes immediately invalid.

Also, please support gimpnelly in her comic industry harassment survey. Thanks.

On April 15 1989 , 24,000 Liverpool fans travelled to a football match. 96 never returned home.

The Hillsborough disaster occurred 25 year ago today. For decades, fans were blamed for the deaths of their family members and friends, and they were accused of stealing wallets from corpses. It was all lies concocted by the authorities—including elected officials—and spread by tabloids.
In the picture you see above, two young supporters of rival clubs—Liverpool and Everton—stand together to honor the memory of the 96 and to thank those who’ve battled for decades to uncover the truth.
